Mahesh Gupta, Founder & MD, Kent RO systems gets candid with neha saraiya on what drove him to quit his job at IOC and set up his own venture

Pioneers in bringing revolutionary Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology to India, Kent started its operations from Noida in 1999. Despite a humble beginning, today Kent has successfully established itself as the market leader in the segment. In an exclusive conversation with 4Ps B&M, Mahesh Gupta, MD, Kent shares the experience of his journey to the summit.

What prompted you to quit your job at IOC and venture into water purification business?
I left IOC in 1988 with an aim to start my own business to save petroleum products. I came out with equipments that could test and monitor the consumption levels as well as purify oil. That business was quite successful and in fact we are doing well in it even today. Then, in 1998, I decided to venture into the water purification system. We started a new technology called RO against a giant in India called Aqua Guard. It was very difficult to fight the elephant at that time. But today we feel that we have created a product category besides the product itself.

So, the journey would have been quite difficult for you?
Initially I had to work like a clerk, peon and everything. It was a complete one man show. Thus, at times, it was a challenge as I had to work at all levels. But I was prepared for it in a way. On the operational side, the next challenge was that although I knew that I had a good product, our brand was not popular as people were not aware of the technology. I didn’t even have enough money to educate them or go for a big advertising campaign as HUL did when it entered the industry with Pureit.

ASHOK K. MITTAL, CHANCELLOR, LOVELY PROFESSIONAL UNIVERSITY TALKS ABOUT HIS JOURNEY SO FAR. BY AMIR MOIN

What began as a sweetmeat family business 49 years back, moved on to become an agency for Bajaj Auto. It was a credible move ahead for Ashok K. Mittal, but one that didn’t satisfy his ambitions. His next step was to invest in another business arm, one that made him a full-fledged Maruti dealer. The new millenium saw him venture into the educational sector, and the International Institute of Management was born in 2000. It didn’t work magic for him, which eventually forced him to change the name of the institution to Lovely Professional University (LPU). Onlookers today wonder – what next for Mittal? Surprisingly, for now, he has no plans to diversify into any other vertical. For him hereon, life is all about LPU.

After many diversification moves, you finally seem to have settled in the educational sector. What motivated you to take this step?
The Lovely Group was started by my late father Shri Baldev Raj Mittal. I would first say that we never viewed education as an industry. It is a social responsibility. Our group as business house was doing well and this gave us the motivation to give back to the society what it had given us. Therefore we chose education as it is only education that can change India’s future.

LPU was a management institute when it was started in 2000. In 2006 it became a university. How has the journey been so far?
The journey has been very interesting so far. There were challenges, but things have turned out well so far. The initial challenge was the nightmare of going through the general approval formalities. Getting quality students was another issue. Today we have 24,000 students and reputed companies are picking them up on campus. What else does a university want?

ASOKA LIFESCIENCE FOUNDER SOURAV ROY SPEAKS TO ANGSHUMAN PAUL ON HOW HE PLANS TO USE R&D AND MARKETING INITIATIVES FOR A PAN-INDIA REACH

They have positioned themselves as a research-based pharmacy, which is engaged in product manufacturing and supply. But once you visit the office of Asoka Lifescience Ltd located in the lush green area of Laketown, Kolkata, you realise that the company is akin to an institution that creates remedies for chronic ailments. Brainchild of deft entrepreneur Sourav Roy, Asoka Lifescience is all set to expand its wings beyond Bengal. In an exclusive interview with 4Ps B&M, Sourav shares his dreams and journey till date.

What propelled you to start this organization?
Nature always attracted me and from my early childhood, I was a nature-observer. I strongly believe that when it comes to human diseases, most of the remedies are hidden in nature and details of such remedies are mentioned in our Ayurvedas. My fascination for Ayurvedic research and nature motivated me to start this research based organization.

Which was your first successful product?
Our first product was ‘Resq’, which is a mouth-dissolving anti-asthma medicine. It is an amazing relief for asthma patients because no Ayurvedic product dissolves in the mouth. But my product does and hence it goes to the blood directly. In fact, this was a milestone in the history of Ayurveda. This product has done very well as it also doesn’t have any side effects.

EDIFY SCHOOLS ARE DIFFRENT FROM TRADITIONAL INDIAN SCHOOLS. A. K. AGRAWAL, DIRECTOR – BUSINESS, MND EDIFY EDUCATION, EXPLAINS WHY AND HOW...

oving a step away from traditional educational system Edify Schools, a venture of MND Edify Education (P) Ltd., intends to create a society of progressive thinking individuals. In an interaction with 4Ps B&M A. K. Agrawal talks about why Edify Schools can become a leading educational institute in South East Asia by 2015.

Edify Education believes in a different approach to educate children. How tough was it for you to get going at the beginning?
Initially, it was not easy to build such a dedicated staff and to blend the international inquiry-based curriculum with CBSE curriculum. Moreover, parents had to be made aware of our policies and the motive behind chosing a complete modern system of education that is way apart from he traditional methods where children just have to read the lesson and write answers to questions given at the back of lesson. So not only training the teachers, but awareness of parents was also a challenge we had to face. Today I can boast with pride that I have been successful in crossing these basic hurdles.

Your system of imparting education is based on a 3C concept. Can you please elaborate about your 3C concept?
The 3C concept makes a child unfurl into a complete human being. 3C represents for Character, Competence and Content (stands for knowledge). Knowledge is gained through research, internet, books, practical experiences et al. As our content is not based on text books only, it is long lasting and helps in developing skills i.e. competence. Also we thrust upon making a child innovative, diligent, assertive, adaptive, communicative, passionate, object oriented, and risk taker. Combined together these are the skills, which go a long way in character building of a child.

NITIN AGGARWAL, DIRECTOR, PRAYAG EXIM INDIA LTD TALKS TO JAYANT MUNDHRA ON HOW THE COMPANY MANAGED THE TRANSITION FROM AN UNKNOWN ENTITY TO A STRONG CONTENDER

Over the past few decades, Prayag Exim India Ltd has made a name for itself through innovations like PTMT SYMET Bath Assets, and more recently, the H2O range of chrome plated fittings. Director Nitin Aggrawal talks to 4Ps B&M about the company’s endeavours to succeed in a highly unorganised market.

How have the market trends changed since you took over this business?
Since the time I am in this market, I have seen a very positive change from the last 3 years; especially in the sanitaryware market. But in India, 75% of the market is still unorganized in nature where there is no commitment at all and the shopkeepers are selling products like anything on their own profits. The customer is buying on the basis of trust but day by day, people have started believing in the brands. So companies are able to sell their products.

How does this reflect in your performance?
In the last 3 years, the company has grown up to 3 folds with broadly four different product categories – bath fittings, kitchen stainless steel sets, seat covers and stainless steel faucets, launched first in India by us for niche and premium market (places where the water quality is very hard and more chemicals are found in it) with a very natural finish of the product.

Does it mean that the selling of these products has become relatively smoother?
The business is never that smooth for anyone, but one fact is that customers are turning more educated and their trust is growing more on the branded products.

What is it that provides Prayag a source of competitive advantage?
The strongest factors that we believe our products have are the quality and the commitment for further reliability of our business. For instance, earlier there were many departments under government heads. People who used to avail of government flats and houses contacted the company because they use only such products which are reliable to them with no hazards and no maintenance. On this basis, they used only such products which they believed to be “tension free”.

It started with a weird honeymoon idea. And after 30 years, Lonely Planet is a brand loved by travelers, aspiring travelers and the others. Acquired by BBC Worldwide in 2007, and put under the offerings of Worldwide Media in 2010, Lonely Planet is currently reaching to masses in leaps and bounds. Tarun Rai, CEO, Worldwide Media shares with 4Ps B&M the road ahead.

Though rarely, but honeymoon ideas do turn out to be excellent asset builders, instead of being a liability. See for yourself, Tony and Maureen Wheeler met on a park bench in Regent’s Park and married a year later. For their honeymoon, unlike other couples, they came up with a weird as well as a daring plan. They decided to cross Europe and Asia overland, all the way to Australia. It took them several months and cost them all the money they could earn, beg or borrow, but they made it. Completely broke and content at the same time they decided to share their experience with the world. After burning the midnight oil for several nights, they came up with their very first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. And then there was no looking back. Lonely Planet went on to become a big brand and was acquired by BBC Worldwide in 2007. In 2010, BBC Worldwide came together with the Times Group to give birth to Worldwide Media, which now publishes Lonely Planet in India. In an interaction with 4Ps B&M, Tarun Rai, CEO, Worldwide Media tells why this magazine is here to stay and what makes it stand out.

Indian travellers are becoming aware and now they are ready to explore more. How can Lonely Planet Magazine become the best companion for them?
Indians are travelling in increasing numbers both within India and outside. And the nature of the traveler is also changing. They want to try out new places and do new things in familiar ones. This is precisely why we thought it was a great time to launch Lonely Planet Magazine. It has the credibility and depth of knowledge that no one else can match.

How are you positioning yourself in India?
Lonely Planet Magazine is positioned as the expert travel source that provides both inspiration and practical advice to the Indian traveler. The magazine has an unmatched depth of knowledge with access to more than 200 travel writers across the world and a huge bank of photographs. We have tailored the magazine for the Indian traveler by including sections like Fancy a Curry and Go Veg that tell the traveler where to find an Indian restaurant and vegetarian ones. It also has a special section on what the kids can do in various cities. We are targeting the upmarket Indian couple who are passionate about travel and are seeking new experiences.

Lonely Planet Magazine’s competitors have been in the market for quite some time now. What according to you will set Lonely Planet Magazine apart from the others?
While there are other travel magazines in the country, none has the expertise and credibility of Lonely Planet Magazine. The response that we have received from the readers and advertisers proves our hypothesis that the Indian traveler is looking forward to expert travel advice from a magazine like ours.

After regaining its top position in the luxury car space, Mercedes-Benz appears in no mood to get complacent. And it doesn’t mind venturing into the second-hand car market to remain the king. 4Ps B&M analyses Mercedes’ pre-owned car trick!

Forget repeat purchase, repeat sales is the new found vernacular amongst those in the trade of luxury cars. Precisely four months back, Mercedes-Benz had started contacting its consumers in India (who had bought its cars about three to four years back), to discover with certainty whether they were willing to sell-off their used Mercedes automobile(s). The case history isn’t much different in the overseas markets. But unlike any other Merc-driven muse of history, this one has the Indian epic spoken with great ardor. It was christened the ‘Proven Exclusivity program’, and little under a year of this new found strategy being implemented in the West to increase market penetration, Mercedes decided to try out the recipe in India.

Two months after the first Mercedes customer was contacted (in April 2010), the first lot of pre-owned cars was ready to hit the Indian market. Many believe that this is a defensive act that will translate into greater command over market share for Merc. They are right. Call it beating a retreat, but this was an expected strategy, especially after Mercedes was displaced by BMW in 2009 (in terms of unit sales) as the king of the Indian luxury car market. But as destiny would desire, Mercedes is today back at the numero uno spot after being left behind in the sweepstakes for a few months.

A few months back, Peter Kronschabl, the-then President of BMW India had told 4Ps B&M, “Getting to the top position is easier compared to the efforts that go in retaining it, especially when it comes to the Indian market.” Mercedes has seemingly learnt its lesson, and is today not only retaining its feathered hat but also growing through innovative schemes, with the ‘Proven Exclusivity program’ being the first card to be drawn out in the process.

According to data released by Mercedes-Benz, the company has sold close to 2449 vehicles during the first half of 2010, which is 12.2% more than what its closest competitor BMW could manage. [Even BMW had announced its entry into the used-car market more than a year back, but the company will take at least a few months before it makes significant headway in the pre-owned car market.]

“People in India have grown seeing Mercedes brand over the past many many years and we enjoy a very high aspirational value in the mind of the consumer,” explains Wilfried Aulbur, MD, Mercedes-Benz India to 4Ps B&M, while talking about the bounceback of the luxury brand in India.

Click on to the capital market tracking websites like rediffmoney.com, moneycontrol.com, et al, and the first thing one notices is an animated online ad wherein a [virtual] DJ is remixing music and dancing to various tunes. Wondering what such spunky ads are doing in websites that are believed to carry some serious numbers? Well, that’s how Motilal Oswal Asset Management Company is marketing its maiden offering – an Exchange Traded Fund (ETF). In fact, named as MOSt Shares M50, this new offering from Motilal Oswal (it’s India’s first fundamentally weighted ETF based on Nifty as well) seeks investment return that corresponds to the performance of S&P CNX Nifty Index. This means that the constituents of MOSt 50 Basket will be the same as the constituents of Nifty. Globally, fundamental indexing is popular among investors, but it is yet to take off in India. However, if MOSt Shares M50 clicks with Indian investors, it is set to mark a beginning of new era for ETFs. But what is it that prompted this AMC to position the product in an entirely different way from its traditional counterparts? “It’s a unique investment product that combines the benefits of active allocation and passive execution by using a fundamental weighing approach to the most popular market benchmark - Nifty. As an ETF platform, MOSt Shares M50 also provides the benefits of a mutual fund and a share,” says Nitin Rakesh, MD & CEO, Motilal Oswal AMC. Well, we’ll wait for the performance.

Apart from pricing what are other differentiators for MTS?
For us, Value added services (VAS) are a very big differentiating factor and we are seeing a lot of traction on the same as of now. Earlier it was only SMS that was really very popular but now with the introduction of data there has been a lot of attraction coming from customers and we feel that with time it would only go up.

You have some special plans for CRBT. What are your expectations from the same?
Yes, we have a lot of interesting options bundled in for our customers for VAS usage. Right now, we are quite excited to offer our customers a bonus for helping us reach the hallmark of 5 million customers and hope they would like the offering.

Do you think that the tariffs have bottomed up?
No, there’s still a lot of scope. When you look at it from the customer’s perspective you look at the overall value that one can derive and tariff is just a part. What the customer is really looking into is how much value for his money that he can get, which to him is how many times in the month does he need to recharge. And our recherché vouchers last for a longer time than our competitors for sure.
