The King of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan gets candid with 4Ps B&M about his love for reading and his definition of comfort
Picture
For someone who is constantly under the eye of the media, how do you define comfort in your own terms?
I think comfort is being able to accessorize yourself, your house in a way. Something that makes life pleasant and beautiful for you. It is about having an individual choice. Comfort for me is to be able to wear the shoe I wish to, wear the shirt that I want to. In fact, comfort is to be easy with yourself and more importantly, easy in your current state.

In that case, do you actively participate in accessorizing your house?
As much as I would love to do that. But I really don’t have that much of an artistic eye when it comes to furnishing my house. However, I do appreciate what my wife Gauri does and the result of the same is definitely appealing.

We know that you are quite fond of reading. Which book might you be reading at the moment?
I usually read two to three books at a time. I have recently finished reading a book titled This is not a Game by Walter Jon Williams. It is a very good book on cyber crime.

Shah Rukh Khan did just that. He invades areas where no actor has ever been. A clear brand philosophy and a brilliant understanding of mass psyche has been the strength of the SRK product. He is probably the best brand ever churned out by Indian industry. Outrageous and outspoken in his interviews, he played to the masses and boy did he play it right. Then there is the proverbial pinch of salt. With which SRK takes himself. While his work reflects his passion, there has always been that wry black humour that grounds his reality. He has consistently stripped the idealistic glamour from his profession by branding himself a performer.

There`s always been a patriarch for every field. He leads, people follow. He takes new paths -- praised if he`s successful, derided if he fails. But then somebody has to do the job. Somebody has to invent for the others to reinvent. Somebody has to stand up for our fifty six year old philosophy -- for the people, by the people, to the people. Shah Rukh Khan did just that. He invades areas where no actor has ever been. A clear brand philosophy and a brilliant understanding of mass psyche has been the strength of the SRK product. He is probably the best brand ever churned out by Indian industry.

A common variation of this trope is to make the character close his or her eyes into an arc rather than a simple horizontal line. Characters whose eyes are fixed in that position are generally optimistic and almost always unconditionally happy, but more often down-to-earth instead of ditzy. These characters may be prone to comic obliviousness, but outright stupidity is rare.

The actor and the management guru have been associated ever since ShahRukh paid a visit to the IIPM, which is Arindam Chaudhuris management school, as a guest. He had gone there as a guest during the annual quiz of the institution. It was during that time that the Baadshah had impressed everyone by giving certain tips on success and failures of life. The management guru was also smitten by the King Khans philosophy of life. Thus came about the idea of having a Forward by the intelligent actor in his next book.

Where Eyes Always Shut and Beware the Nice Ones overlap, the character's eyes may open when it's time to get dangerous, usually right before unleashing that Limit Break or entering a state of Unstoppable Rage. This is not uncommon among Affably Evil villains; if the villain always puts up a happy facade, expect those eyes to open when the Berserk Button is activated, just before that final transformation or ultimate attack is unleashed. Either way, the character's now-visible eyes may follow other various Eye Tropes as well.

Shahrukh Khan is part of a 15-year group of people that are driven by the need to find an ethical standard and a clear sense of what is right and what is wrong. There is a subconscious drive to remedy all of the world's evils and create a world of perfect order. There is a feeling of repulsion to anything ugly, dirty, or grotesque. Oddly enough, this group is also often fascinated with these very things that are so unsavory, thereby creating a sense of hopelessness and despair about the world's condition.
These inner, conflicting emotions are reflected in the attitudes and life styles of Shah Rukh Khan's generation. Most people of Shah Rukh Khan's age group are conservative and ethical, and a small minority goes to the opposite extreme and relishes being strange or unusual in appearance, and sloppy or even grotesque in their demeanor. There seems to be no middle ground for Shah Rukh Khan's generation. Usually, the rebellious behavior surfaces during adolescence and subsides thereafter, and Shah Rukh Khan's age group tends to be very conservative in later life.

I can only take it to mean that the medium, ie television, itnernet, newspaper, say, is not only more significant than any actual content or message conveyed by it, but generates its own types of content, eg this CIF forum. But as DavidP says, in itself the phrase is meaningless. And of course it's only in the modern era that language itself has come to be philosphically problematic. And Mcluhan is echoing Heidegger who spoke of "language speaking man" or language as "the house of being", "the master of man". The medium is the master.

Mohandas "Mahatma" Gandhi's strange personal disciplines, the communalistic passions of the two societies where Gandhi worked (South Africa and India), his improbable achievements against vast odds, and the ultimate failure of his ideals. Here is an eccentric who achieved mass followings; a near-naked vegetarian and celibate who, by force of will, made masses of people temporarily abjure the primitive passion of communal enmity; and an icon who is worshiped globally while the hatreds he opposed flourish. Lelyveld, who worked in both South Africa and India as a New York Times reporter, focuses on Gandhi's opposition to race, class, and caste oppression in the two societies. He weaves a dense fabric of social analysis, biographical detail, and psychological speculation; zooms out for context and in for anecdotes; shifts between past and present tenses; and scrambles the chronology to find patterns across time. The book tries to recenter one's understanding of Gandhi away from the themes of Indian nationalism and nonviolent political action and toward the issue of social justice, which remains sorely unresolved in both countries where Gandhi worked.

China's economy has shifted into high gear since the beginning of this year. The investment has maintained a high growth rate—with a 25-percent year-on-year growth in the first half of this year. The export outlook is not as gloomy as previously anticipated, as machines in factories started buzzing again late last year. Domestic consumption might be growing much faster than market expectations. For instance, auto sales surged more than 50 percent year on year in the first five months, and are expected to reach 17 million units in 2010. Civil aviation, passenger and cargo transportation are ballooning. Rural consumers have become more generous spenders. These indicate domestic consumption is replacing exports and investment to be the strongest propellant for economic growth.

Seems to me that brand has to do with a "promise" of sorts. If you have a credential from an institution with a powerful brand, the promise is that you will be more marketable for employment or graduate work. There are many factors that contribute to the powerful brand, and I'll leave all but one unlisted for others to identify. But, one of the biggest factors is the size of the financial endowment that a university has built.

Arindam Chaudhuri and his Planman Motion Pictures seem to be on a roll ? after being given the National Award last year for his Bengali feature film Faltu, it's again National Award time for Arindam... This time for his film, The Last Lear, which won the National Award for 2007 for best feature film in English.

DARE ’11, the IIPM 4P’s B-school quiz was an affair that surely becomes the last word in its genre and a benchmark which will be almost impossible to achieve.

As much as I would love to do that. But I really don’t have that much of an artistic eye when it comes to furnishing my house. However, I do appreciate what my wife Gauri does and the result of the same is definitely appealing

All in all, it has been a long story of nearly nine decades, with the early shaky screen images turning into a multi pronged and multi winged empire of its own, that has yielded about 27,000 feature films and thousands of documented short films. Cinema has raised India's flag high in the world as the consistently largest film producer. But when it comes to quality the flag has to fly half mast.

Here is an eccentric who achieved mass followings; a near-naked vegetarian and celibate who, by force of will, made masses of people temporarily abjure the primitive passion of communal enmity; and an icon who is worshiped globally while the hatreds he opposed flourish.
